Every chapter starts and ends with a Bible verse and with a prayer at the end of each chapter. It's very consistent with much of the discussions on missional and social justice work. I've only read Max Lucado's children stories, and as is such I didn't know what to expect when I began to read.

It's all too easy to get comfortable in this world--particularly in American society. Lucado has a gift of taking a Biblical story and telling it in a contemporary way. In a world full of injustice, poverty, oppression, and malaise, it is easy to become hardened, cynical, and disengaged. Always Challenging Max Lucado is a favorite of mine. Lucado is a master wordsmith. Lucado - in his warm and inviting way - re-tells the stories of the first believers and uses them to illuminate the way of Christ and how believers thousands of years later are called to change the world in simple yet counter-cultural ways.

He tells you why through inspiring stories. It is a necessary call in the midst of a time and place more devoted to materialism and consumerism than authentic New Testament Christianity and its emphasis on clearing prejudice, assisting the downtrodden and dispossessed, and reliance on God and not self. I usually get very emotionally drawn in by Lucado's work, but this one wasn't so much. This one especially is.

I can't quite put my finger on it. Life is racing by, and if are not careful, you and I will lookup, and our shot at it will have passed us by.

I suggest picking up this book if it's in your church library and would be a wonderful resource for a church family preaching through Acts - as potential sermon fodder and as a complimentary small group resource - or as a supplement to personal devotions.

Although I really like Max Lucado's writing, it's been a while since I've read one of his books.

This celebration of Christ through social justice makes the book uniquely evangelical in a good way. This would be a fantastic book use in a small group Bible study or devotional time. On the other hand, they have a real allergy to hypocrisy. In vivid prose, unsung heroes are brought to life as examples of people whose work benefits the world beyond the span of their lives.
